Artist’s Note
Solomon - What truly satisfies the human heart? Is it wealth? Admiration or acclaim?
The older I get, the clearer it becomes: none of these.
Solomon, considered the wisest to ever live arrived at the same conclusion long ago. And he should know. No desire was ever withheld from him. Riches, pleasure, power, wisdom itself - he pursued and possessed them all without restraint. Yet he looked at the sum of it and named it vanity - a chasing after wind. I of course never tasted that level of abundance or wealth. Still, I recognize the pattern in my own small life. The things I once swore would make me happy- once i got it-quickly loose their appeal. The weight I expected them to carry just evaporates, and fast. This is the truth which he also speaks about - that our desires expand as we do. And while it can be uncomfortable to think of, maybe its not a flaw in the design, but the design itself.
Life can feel like a treadmill, but that doesn’t have to be seen as a punishment. It could be something that exposes the limits of the plane we’re on. It could even be an invitation.. to reliquish all to God
