Artist’s Note

Our rib cage expands and contracts all day without instruction. It’s flexible enough to move, rigid enough to hold shape.

It’s made up of 24 ribs, the sternum, and cartilage that allows the chest to widen and narrow with each breath. Together they protect the heart and lungs while still allowing constant motion. It’s a structure built to repeat the same task thousands of times a day without strain.

To me, it’s one of the most beautiful structures in the body. Proof that we’re built with care, inside and out.
