Beyond the Frame…
I drew this piece after becoming fascinated by the way elephants experience the world… they don’t just hear sound through the air; they sense events long before they arrive.
Through delicate nerve endings in their feet and trunks, they register vibrations moving through the earth itself. Footsteps... distant calls... storms forming miles away. Information reaches them while it is still traveling, long before it becomes a reality to the rest of the world. That idea haunted me. It made me wonder if such abilities are dormant within us… unnoticed, or perhaps simply forgotten.
As I tried to capture the deliberate motion of his stride, I began practicing what I think of as "silent listening." It is a kind of attentiveness that doesn't rush forward or try to interpret too quickly. It waits. It receives. It listens without interrupting... and understands without needing to filter what it hears.
There is a purity in the animal kingdom that feels increasingly rare. In this piece, the elephant as a subject began to fade, and this concept of silent listening became the core... a way of paying attention that still exists, quietly, beneath the noise... waiting for us to feel it.
