Beyond the Frame…

Of all the characters in the Cars universe, Mater has always been my favorite. His value doesn't come from his speed or his shiny coat, but from the way he loved Lightning McQueen for who he was, completely apart from his accomplishments. He was the mirror that showed Lightning a side of himself he didn’t know existed… the side that valued connection over the finish line.

Mater represents a specific standard of friendship that my father encouraged in my sister and me when we were growing up. As I drew his weathered, rusted frame, I wanted to capture the warmth that makes him so iconic. He is proof that a "tow truck" spirit, one that is always ready to pull a friend out of the mud, is the most valuable thing you can be.

To me, Cars stands as one of Disney’s greatest films. They were masters at the art of the "hidden lesson," entertaining us with spectacle while teaching us how to be better humans. This piece is a celebration of that simple, honest kindness.
